Chelsea title hopes take another hit

LONDON, Nov 21 — Chelsea’s faltering English Premier League title challenge suffered another blow yesterday when they lost 2-1 at home to Liverpool following a late winner by defender Glen Johnson.

A second successive home defeat for Chelsea following their 5-3 loss to Arsenal left them 12 points behind leaders Manchester City after 12 matches of the season.

Chelsea fell behind when Maxi Rodriguez struck after 34 minutes but equalised when substitute Daniel Sturridge scored at the far post 10 minutes into the second half.

The game at Stamford Bridge appeared to be heading for a draw until former Chelsea full back Johnson found himself in space on the right and burst into the penalty area before unleashing a low shot into the corner of the net.

Liverpool, unbeaten in nine matches in all competitions, climbed to sixth in the table, level on points with fourth-placed Chelsea, Tottenham Hotspur and Arsenal.

“It is not good to be so low in the table in relation to the leaders at this stage of the season but there is no running away from our responsibilities,” Chelsea manager Andre Villas-Boas told a news conference.

“There is no calling this a year of transition, no calling for time to do our work. Our responsibility is to win the most amount of trophies we can and at the moment we are in four competitions.”

Villas-Boas has endured a difficult start as Chelsea manager.

“It is not the brightest of starts in the Premier League for Chelsea in the last 10 years, but the belief is there from the team and that is what we have to focus on,” he said.

Liverpool manager Kenny Dalglish was delighted with his team.

“We played really well in the first half — they came back in the second half and put us under a bit of pressure, but we hung on in there and the result matched our ambition of wanting to win the game,” he said.

“Glen Johnson ran into their box in the 86th minute to score the goal to win the game, I don’t know what he was doing up there, but it’s an indication of how much we wanted to win when your right full-back is up there.”

Chelsea striker Fernando Torres, signed from Liverpool for £50 million (RM240 million) in January, and Andy Carroll who replaced him at Anfield for £35 million both started on the bench but the visitors struck first after a breathless start to the match.

Charlie Adam dispossessed John Obi Mikel on the edge of the Chelsea penalty area to set up an exchange of passes between Craig Bellamy and Luis Suarez before Maxi Rodriguez swept the ball over a diving Petr Cech and into the far corner.

Bellamy, making only his second league start since returning to Liverpool, was at the heart of most of their first-half raids and Suarez put the erratic David Luiz under almost continual pressure every time Liverpool broke forward.

Suarez and Chelsea captain John Terry, both the subject of investigations into allegations of racism, had contrasting halves, with Suarez causing Chelsea problems and Terry looking far from his old assured self.

Chelsea, though, looked livelier after the break when Sturridge, who made his England debut against Sweden on Tuesday, immediately added pace to their attack and he equalised from close range following a surging run and cross from Florent Malouda.

Moments later Chelsea went close to a second but Liverpool goalkeeper Pepe Reina kept his side level with a brilliant point-blank save from Branislav Ivanovic who flicked on a Didier Drogba free kick.

Malouda twice went close for Chelsea as Liverpool defended in depth but the visiting team suddenly found inspiration in the shape of the marauding Johnson who surged into the penalty area and stroked the ball past the despairing Terry into the corner of the net.

Chelsea suffered their first back-to-back home league defeats since 2002 and will head for a Champions League match at Bayer Leverkusen in Germany on Wednesday having lost three of their last four league games.

Manchester City notched up their 11th win in 12 league matches with a 3-1 victory over Newcastle United on Saturday and Manchester United stayed five points behind their local rivals in second place with a 1-0 win at Swansea City.

Tottenham, who have two matches in hand on the other leading sides, will climb to third with victory over Aston Villa at White Hart Lane today (2000GMT). — Reuters

Match-fixers are buying clubs, warns Fifa

Criminal gangs are making long-term investments in match-fixing, purchasing clubs and organising referee training camps as part of their infiltration of football, Fifa’s security chief told Reuters in an interview.

Chris Eaton said that, as part of its response, Fifa wanted to provide witness protection for players who came forward when they were approached by match-fixers and would consider rehabilitation for those corrupted at a young age.

It would also set up a hotline open to anyone to provide information on suspicious behaviour.

“We want to manipulate the manipulators and intimidate the intimidators; they have to realise that we are serious and Fifa is going to protect its people, its sport against these people who have no conscience at all,” he said.

“Infiltration is a strong word but my assessment is that organised criminality has infiltrated at several levels of football for the precise purpose of making money from the enormous amount of gambling income which is now being generated.”

Buying clubs was a way for organised groups to control the results of matches, warned Eaton (picture), who worked at Interpol for more than 12 years before joining Fifa.

“We’re seeing a trend for the purchase of low-level clubs and the movement of players and the trafficking of players,” he said, adding that this happened mainly in “less wealthy” countries.

“There is a significant trend in the trafficking of players, moving them into other leagues with a mentor, normally a player who comes from the same country or region, has a great deal of respect, is more than likely corrupted, who is able to influence these players.

“We’re seeing referees’ development schools and player development schools, some of which are clearly a front for criminals. They are investing long-term in the compromise of these players.

“They (development camps) are often endorsed by a federation and perhaps the federation doesn’t realise who is behind the operation.”

Match-fixing, usually by illegal gambling rings, has become a major problem for soccer in the last few years.

In one recent case in Finland, Wilson Raj Perumal, a Singaporean national, was jailed for two years while nine players — seven Zambians and two Georgians — were given suspended sentences for trying to fix matches.

Perumal paid players up to €20,000 (RM85,000) per match and received up to €50,000, in addition to some of the betting profits, each time the results of the Rovaniemi team were fixed.

Eaton said the approaches to players or referees would often begin with a gift.

“They’ll go to a player and they’ll say: ‘You played a great game today, I made some money off you, here’s €1,000’.

“The next time he plays, the same person will give him another €1,000 — for some of these players, we’re talking about third or fourth division, it’s more than they would make for the game.

“The third time they say: ‘I can give you €10,000 if you don’t score a goal today, or if you let a goal in today’.

“They wait outside the changing-rooms, they know the players, they know where the players live, drink, they’ll have a mentor.

“This is what Perumal did to several African players in Finland: he gave them some money as gifts, then asked them to do something for him when they were ingratiated and compromised by him.”

Eaton added that not all attempts to fix games were successful.

“These are athletes, they get involved in the game and they forget about their agreement. They become enthused in the match and it doesn’t go the way it was supposed to go and they’re punished.”

“We have examples of players being severely bashed, (and) referees.”

Earlier this year, Fifa set up a task force with Interpol, promising to donate €20 million to the fight against match-fixing over the next 10 years.

One of its jobs would be to provide protection and anonymity for whistleblowers.

“We need to provide them with protection because that is an important commodity against organised crime,” Eaton said.

“This is not so easy to deliver but we will deliver it, we are in the process of discussing with particular national governments and police in vulnerable countries how we can support that.”

A hotline and rewards scheme would be set up for people to come forward with information and an amnesty considered in some cases, along with guarantees of anonymity.

“We will have an amnesty for players and officials who have been corrupted fairly young, unfairly corrupted, corrupted by a strong player or official or referee or someone who’s very influential in football, in a way they didn’t have any real choice.”

Eaton said that, ultimately, it was up to governments to solve the problem.

“Football did not invite gambling, Fifa derives no benefit from gambling,” he said.

“We didn’t invite criminals to take advantage of gambling either, but because gambling exists, they are infiltrating us. We are a victim of the massive gambling activities of the world and governments have an obligation to protect us from that.” — Reuters

Man City power on with victory over Newcastle

November 20, 2011

LONDON, Nov 20 — Free-scoring Manchester City maintained their grip at the top of the Premier League with a 3-1 home win over Newcastle United yesterday to take their goals tally to 42 from 12 games.

Mario Balotelli and Sergio Aguero scored penalties and Micah Richards was also on target to condemn third-placed Newcastle to their first defeat of the season and leave City as the only unbeaten side in the top flight.

City have 34 points from a possible 36 this season and have piled up a staggering goal difference of 31 to lead second-placed Manchester United by five points.

The champions did enough to earn a 1-0 victory at Swansea City in the late kickoff — their third consecutive one-goal win since their 6-1 drubbing by City at Old Trafford.

Javier Hernandez scored the only goal in the 11th minute in South Wales from a cross by Welshman Ryan Giggs to inflict a first home defeat on the Premier League newcomers.

Arsenal maintained their improvement with a fifth consecutive league victory thanks to Robin van Persie’s double in a 2-1 win at Norwich City, which moved the London club above Liverpool into sixth place with 22 points.

Liverpool (19 points) face fourth-placed Chelsea (22) today, with Tottenham Hotspur (22), who are fifth, at home to eighth-placed Aston Villa tomorrow.

Bottom club Wigan Athletic ended a run of eight successive league defeats in a 3-3 home draw with fellow strugglers Blackburn Rovers, who equalised with an injury-time penalty despite playing most of the second half with 10 men.

Wigan manager Roberto Martinez labelled Blackburn’s second goal “scandalous” after Rovers forward Yakubu appeared to use his hand to restart play from a corner.

Bolton Wanderers remained in the relegation zone after a 2-1 defeat at West Bromwich Albion but Everton eased away from the bottom three courtesy of a 2-1 home win over fellow strugglers Wolverhampton Wanderers.

Promoted Queens Park Rangers won 3-2 at Stoke City while Sunderland drew 0-0 at home to Fulham.

Unstoppable City

While the £194.9 million (RM972.9 million) English record loss Manchester City reported for the 2010-11 financial year on Friday highlighted how much their route to the top of the league has cost, the payback is that they look unstoppable.

Roberto Mancini could again afford to juggle his squad but his selection dealt with Newcastle relatively easily.

“I’ll make no bones about it, they are the best side we’ve played by some distance, very very powerful,” Newcastle manager Alan Pardew told reporters.

City’s goal tally after 12 games is the best in the top flight since Tottenham Hotspur netted 44 in their first dozen games in 1963 but Mancini warned against getting carried away with the idea his side will stroll to the title.

“As a team, we’re strong now but we should think the season is long, probably there will be a difficult moment and for this reason it is important now if we can score goals, if we can win games in a row, it is very important,” he told reporters.

Newcastle looked set to reach the break on level terms until Ryan Taylor blocked Yaya Toure’s shot with his hands and Balotelli side-footed home the resulting penalty.

On the stroke of halftime, Richards, a rare home-grown player at the world’s richest club, nipped in to seize on a loose ball and double City’s advantage.

Richards was involved again in the 72nd minute when he was bundled over in the area and Sergio Aguero stroked the spot kick past Tim Krul. Dan Gosling got a late consolation for the visitors.

While City cannot stop scoring, fierce rivals United are chiselling out wins as they try and keep pace.

They were never at their best against a Swansea side whose passing game impressed United manager Alex Ferguson but rarely looked troubled at the back apart from one let-off in the first half when Scott Sinclair mis-kicked in front of goal.

“We were comfortable against a team who keep the ball well,” Ferguson said. “We showed concentration and that is what we needed because a few weeks ago that was the criticism we were getting.”

Arsenal had to come from a goal down at promoted Norwich after a defensive howler from Per Mertesacker allowed Steve Morison to fire the home side ahead after 16 minutes.

Dutchman Van Persie equalised with a tap-in after 26 minutes and struck again before the hour with a deft finish to take his league tally this term to 13 and his calendar year total to 31.

“Robin is exceptional but we all know within the club that he’s an exceptional player,” manager Arsene Wenger told Sky Sports. “Sometimes, what was in the way was the fact he was injured. Since he plays, he shows just how good he is.” — Reuters

Real, Barca move clear at La Liga summit

November 20, 2011

Real Madrid’s players celebrate after they scored against Valencia during their Spanish first division soccer match at the Mestalla Stadium in Valencia. — Reuters pic
MADRID, Nov 20 — Real Madrid and Barcelona pulled away at the top of La Liga when leaders Real edged third-placed Valencia 3-2 away in a thrilling but ill-tempered clash after Barca thumped visiting Real Zaragoza 4-0 last night.

Real’s victory, courtesy of goals from Karim Benzema, Sergio Ramos and Cristiano Ronaldo, maintained their three-point lead over great rivals Barcelona in second and lifted Jose Mourinho’s side to 31 points from 12 matches.

Spanish and European champions Barca widened their advantage over Valencia, the last club other than the big two to win the title back in 2004, to four points.

La Liga top scorer Lionel Messi struck his 15th of the season at a damp Nou Camp, with Gerard Pique and substitute David Villa also netting against their former club and Pique’s central defensive partner Carles Puyol scoring a rare goal.

An aggressive Valencia put Real under early pressure at the Mestalla but a lapse in concentration allowed Benzema to open the scoring in the 20th minute.

With the Valencia players still organising themselves, Xabi Alonso took a quick free kick and France striker Benzema brought the ball under control with his first touch and struck a rasping volley past goalkeeper Diego Alves with his second.

Valencia dominated the second half as the yellow cards came thick and fast in response to some robust tackling before Ramos outjumped his markers to nod home a 72nd minute second.

Home striker Roberto Soldado made it 2-1 three minutes later with a powerful drive before Ronaldo scored his 14th of the campaign in the 78th and Soldado poked in his second with eight minutes of regular time left to set up a thrilling finish.

In almost the final action of the game deep into added time, the ball appeared to strike a Real defender near his arm as he lay on the ground by the goal line but the referee waved away Valencia’s frantic appeals for a penalty.

The irate home players surrounded the officials at the final whistle and Mourinho was pelted with objects as he quickly made his way down the tunnel.

In the earlier kickoff, Pique nodded Barca in front from a Xavi free kick in the 18th minute before Messi picked up a Cesc Fabregas pass in the penalty area shortly before halftime and sent a low, right-foot shot past Roberto.

Captain Puyol followed up his own saved effort to score a third some 10 minutes after the break and Villa, who replaced Fabregas in the 66th, put Barca 4-0 ahead with an acrobatic header 15 minutes from time.

In an interview with Spanish television, Pique said Barca have a tough month ahead, including Wednesday’s Champions League game at AC Milan and the first of two ‘Clasicos’ against Real on Dec. 10 before they head off to the Club World Cup in Japan.

“It’s a difficult month, with a lot of important games,” he said. “Madrid is ahead in the league and we want to finish top of our group in the Champions League but we have the quality to come through it.”

Injury-ravaged Villarreal claimed their third victory of the campaign when Borja Valero caught Real Betis keeper Casto off his line with a lobbed effort in the 21st minute that gave Juan Carlos Garrido’s side a 1-0 home win.

Villarreal, who visit Bayern Munich in the Champions League on Tuesday, climbed to 10th on 14 points.

Struggling Betis won their opening four matches of the season but have taken only one point from the last eight and are 13th on 13 points, three ahead of Zaragoza in 16th. — Reuters

Hi Guys

Dear Frens,

My apologies for been absence for a while from blogging. Pretty busy with setting up my private web whilst working hard on the contents. However I continue send out tips to members.

Now today onwards I will post out matches likely to go over based on systems that was created by me and using this blog as way to post out all picks that the system show will likely go tg over so in short I won't be posting my picks here as my picks though selected from the system will be strictly for paid members. But good news is if you are betting on certain games you might like to compare notes here before placing your bets. This way its fair for my members and fair to free tips viewers and the blog can continue like always except you have to do your own homework by using the system picks compare against your picks and if you are confident then you decide which to place your bets.

Thank you.

Regards,
Admin of Soccertipsguru.
